A group of activists protesting the Manus Island refugee crisis scaled the Sydney Opera House and attempted to unfurl a banner before they were stopped by police.
Five members of the Whistleblowers, Activists and Citizens Alliance, which has been responsible for several high-profile actions across the country, held up signs reading “Australia: World leaders in cruelty” and “Evacuate Manus” before their arrest by a police rescue unit. In a statement, WACA focused on Bill Shorten and the Labor Party, saying “we are demanding Labor end the cruelty they started, by breaking bipartisan endorsement of offshore detention”.
