The WorkSafer Expo will be the first of its kind in Tasmania and is the highlight of WorkSafe
Tasmania Month which aims to raise awareness about work health and safety, as well as reduce
work-related injury, illness and death.
WorkCover Tasmania Board member Dr Rob Walters said the inaugural WorkSafer Expo, which
runs from 23-24 October 2017 at Princes Wharf 1, will offer Tasmanians the opportunity to
access information about safety, health, wellbeing and return-to-work in one convenient
location free of charge.
“Over two days, the WH&S industry will showcase cutting edge products, new technologies and
innovations vital to workplace safety, health and wellbeing in Tasmania,” Dr Walters said.
“The Expo aims to attract and engage employers and employees in all levels of business in an
effort to influence attitudes and behaviours that may contribute to unsafe and unhealthy work
practices.
“The WorkSafer Expo will also feature interactive learning opportunities, forums, networking
sessions and a range of informative speakers from across Australia.
“The speakers program will engage Expo visitors on topics such as strategies to overcome the
stigma of mental illness at work, proactively managing the risk of health, safety and wellbeing,
and applied emotional intelligence.
“The Expo’s speaker program kicked off with this morning’s forum focussing on the issue of
ageing in the Tasmanian workforce, highlighting the importance of retaining and supporting
older workers, with the number of older workers in Tasmania’s labour force increasing from 34
per cent in 2002 to 43 per cent in 2012.
“Our Expo exhibitors range from Safe Farming Tasmania and Relationships Australia Tasmania to
the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency to Relevant Drug Testing Solutions.”
Figures released as part of WorkSafe Tasmania Month, reveal the total number of workplace
injuries in Tasmania dropped by 26 per cent between 2010-2016, decreasing from 9,711 to
7,161.
