ABC election analyst Antony Green says independent Senator Nick Xenophon could become the next South Australian Premier when he contests the next SA state election in 2018.
Xenophon announced his surprise resignation from the Senate on Friday, saying that “South Australian politics has been reduced to a triumph of low expectations” and that neither major party deserves to govern. While it’s unclear who will replace Xenophon as parliamentary leader of the Nick Xenophon Team, Green said the state election was now “a three-party contest”, and that Xenophon’s personal popularity “will probably guarantee that neither major party can get a majority in their own right”.
