It’s World Oceans Day and public awareness around marine plastic pollution (MPP) is reaching a crescendo across the globe. MPP has become a major threat to marine life and the food chain. Evidence suggests that it is now ending up on our dinner plates.

Today, Boomerang Alliance – a national network of more than 60 environmental groups – is proud to announce Australia’s first major international conference focused on identifying and developing solutions for this increasingly urgent issue.

Participation from the CSIRO, UNEP, the Australian Packaging Covenant, industry bodies, government, academia and community will ensure robust discussion of the issue to drive action and innovation at all levels of society.

“Over 9 million tonnes of plastic are finding their way into the oceans each year, most originating from land-based litter. This breaks up into trillions of pieces of microplastic, accumulating year on year throughout the water column and in ocean sediments,” said Jeff Angel, Director of the Boomerang Alliance, which is coordinating the Conference.

“It’s vital that everyone work together to implement a comprehensive suite of solutions. Australia and the Asia/Pacific region are prime marine plastic pollution hotspots, so we need to take leadership on cleaning the oceans and reducing the amount of plastic that is making its way into the marine environment.”

“We are pleased to have a broad cross section speakers on the agenda, who will provide unique perspectives on the conversation, and we will be announcing more high profile participants in the run up to the event.”

Several hundred delegates are expected to attend the two and half day event at Darling Harbour between 30 October to 1 November.
