TASMANIANS URGED NOT TO BE HOODWINKED BY “NO” CASE FEAR-MONGERING
Local marriage equality advocates have urged Tasmanians not to be hoodwinked by fear campaigns from groups campaigning against marriage equality in the upcoming postal vote.
Long-time Tasmanian marriage equality advocate, Rodney Croome, condemned a recent TV advertisement linking marriage equality to boys wearing dresses in schools.
“There is no logical link between allowing same-sex couples to marry and dress codes in schools.”
“I urge Tasmanians to not be hoodwinked by fear campaigns designed to divert debate away from the core issue of equality for all Australians.”
“We saw this kind of over-the-top fear-mongering during the debate on decriminalising homosexuality in Tasmania in the 1990s, and we know those fears came to nothing”
“The sky didn’t fall in then and it won’t now.”
The advertisement in question was released by the Coalition for Marriage and has been widely condemned including by federal Liberal education minister, Simon Birmingham.
