One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts’ barrister has admitted Roberts knew of his British citizenship and was trying to renounce it at the time of the 2016 election.

Speaking in the Court of Disputed Returns yesterday, barrister Robert Newlinds said the British Home Office had sent Roberts a citizenship renunciation form near to the election, which Roberts “filled in and sent back”. The admission puts the lie to Roberts’ repeated claims that he has never held any foreign citizenship, and potentially imperils his eligibility to sit in Parliament. Nationals Senator Matt Canavan, meanwhile, has admitted he has held Italian citizenship since infancy, contradicting his earlier explanation that his mother applied on his behalf and without his knowledge in 2006.
