Good morning, and welcome to The Briefing.

The family of a man shot dead by police at Sydney’s Central Station on Wednesday has criticised the officers involved, saying 30-year-old Danukul Mokmool had a history of mental health problems and “just wanted to die”.

Mokmool was shot four times after threatening a florist with a broken bottle and running into the train station with a pair of scissors. His brother, Charlie Huynh, told the ABC his brother “was just holding scissors” and police “could’ve at least hit him to the ground, pepper spray him, stuff like that”. NSW Police acting assistant commissioner Mark Walton has announced a critical incident investigation into the shooting.
