“No to Adani’s Reef-Wrecking Mine”
#StopAdani #ReefNotCoal
Leaders from the Jewish, Buddhist, and Christian faiths are currently occupying Federal Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg’s office, urging him to withdraw support for the Adani coal mine.
Rabbi Jonathan Keren-Black, spokesperson for the group says:
“We are urging him to listen to the traditional custodians of this land, who have repeatedly said NO to Adani’s reef-wrecking mine; we are urging him to listen to the scientists who have said NO to Adani’s reef-wrecking mine; we are urging him to listen to the people of conscience who are saying NO to Adani’s reef-wrecking mine; and we are calling on the minister to listen to his conscience and show moral leadership to protect creation.”
They will hold a prayerful vigil until the Minister publicly withdraws support for the coalmine in Queensland’s Galilee Basin, or until they are forced by law to leave.
Outside the building, more religious leaders are holding a ceremonial funeral for coal every hour on the hour. Religious leaders from different faith traditions will engage with the rituals of their own tradition, to say that coal is dead, let’s keep it buried.

Rabbi Jonathan Keren-Black
“The imminent threat of climate change means that we must make a just and immediate transition to clean energy. Building the largest coal mine in our country’s history will make this impossible and it will completely blow the Paris Agreement targets”
“This is not a partisan issue; we are not here for a political purpose. We are here to take a stand on one of the most important moral issues of our time.”
Rev Alex Sangster, Uniting Church Minister
“As a minister of religion I am called to stand with those who are most vulnerable and at risk. I am called to fight oppression and injustice wherever I see it. I am engaging in this act of non-violent resistance today to show my support for the Wangan and Jagalingou people, on whose land this mine is supposed to be dug.”
