The benefits of biochar, dung beetles and earthworms in sustainable farming systems was the subject of discussion at a workshop and field day at Exeter and Rosevears on Thursday, 20th July.

Fifty people attended to hear industry experts talk on two topics that if implemented by farmers or gardeners, will provide benefits to soil structure and fertility at any scale of operation.

Agronomist and author on the topic Dr. Graeme Stevenson spoke about the benefits of putting dung beetles and earthworms to work in pastures and gardens, followed by Frank Strie, Master Forester and owner of Terra-Preta Developments (Black Soil Developments) talking about the application opportunities for biochar at all scales, followed by a practical demonstration of making biochar.

Tamar NRM program co-ordinator and organizer Greg Lundstrom of the event said that participant feedback has been highly positive. “Getting fifty people along was a pleasing outcome for us and even better as many said they are now inspired to put into practice what they learnt. Graeme gave us a real insight as to who’s who in the poo, and Frank’s knowledge of biochar and its potential in Tasmania is second to none”.

“This was the seventh workshop in a series of ten run under the banner of “Backyards to Broadacres” and we are current developing up the remainder based on what feedback we have received. The next workshop will include urban farming of potatoes for the smaller landholder and pasture management in spring for the broadacre producers” Mr. Lundstrom said.

Dr Stevenson gifted 200 of his favorite species, the black-headed earthworms (Aporrectodea longa) for integration into the school farm at Exeter where the ag students will map their distribution over time.

The field days are supported with funding through the National Landcare Programme – Sustainable Agriculture Small Grants Round 2015-16,
