El Camino- Path Towards A Cure – the team finishing the trek from Sarria to Santiago De Compostela.
On Saturday 15 July 2017, must prior to the online portal and donations closing, the target goal of $80,000 was met.
That’s $80,000 research dollars.
11 trekkers, 135 kms traversed in 5 days, collectively over $80,000 raised for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
I am so proud that $29,000 alone of this $80,000 was raised here in Tasmania, so a huge thanks to the local community. All to support the Endowed Chairs program for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
In May 2017, the NBCF, working with Inspired Adventures, coordinated a charity trek to Spain to traverse the El Camino. The El Camino is an ancient pilgrimage route traversed by Romans, the Knights Templar, pilgrims and modern day adventurers, and this trek saw eleven trekkers come together for a united common cause, to assist spread awareness and raise funds for breast cancer research.
Those signing up for the trek pledged to raise funds to assist the NBCF support ground breaking research. The NBCF is the leading not for profit raising funds to fund research specifically around breast cancer, and they receive no government funding, instead relying on partnerships, and community and cause related fundraising such as the trek to raise the dollars required to fund research projects in Australia.
Since 1994 the NBCF has awarded over $140 million to 470 Australian-based research projects across the spectrum from understanding the fundamental basis of the disease to psychosocial research aimed at improving the quality of life for survivors. Significant progress has occurred since the NBCF began in 1994 but the work is far from over. More research will help the NBCF reach the next scientific breakthrough.
Fundraising dollars raised via the El Camino campaign is applied to fund the NBCF Endowed Chairs program, providing ongoing funding for two leading lights in the global research field so that they can continue their vital work, feeding into the global research knowledge pool.
Research is the only way to prevent deaths from breast cancer. With one-in-eight Australian women and 1% of men diagnosed in their lifetime, that’s 48 Australian diagnosed each day, and over 65000 Australians living with breast cancer in Australia, trekkers are helping those diagnosed face a better, healthier future.
Sadly 8 women die a day from breast cancer in Australia. Every dollar raised on the Path Towards a Cure: El Camino campaign helps the NBCF move one step closer towards their aspirational goal of ZERO deaths from breast cancer by 2030.
Path Towards a Cure: El Camino required hard work, dedication, teamwork and participants uniting for a common purpose. In this sense, it mirrors the work of the incredible researchers who are working towards better outcomes for breast cancer patients, and a better future for all Australians.
