Local Tasmanian arts organisation CONSTANCE and curators Grace Herbert and Liam James present
HOBIENNALE.

The 2017 HOBIENNALE (HB17) is a new and unique festival which will take place in Hobart from the 3 –
12th November 2017. A large group of artist-run initiatives (ARIs) from across Australia and New
Zealand have teamed up for the festival, each curating an exhibition as part of the program.

Festival Curator Grace Herbert says, “Artist-run initiatives are grassroots organisations, run by groups
of volunteers who are often artists or individuals working in the arts. We believe that some of the most
interesting, critical and diverse exhibitions are shown by artist-run initiatives, and that these varied
organisations are incredibly important to Australia’s art landscape and to their respective communities.

By bringing together a wide group of ARIs from diverse locations, HB17 will foster a much needed
space for dialogue and collaboration between emergent arts spaces, arts workers and artists alike.”

HOBIENNALE is a free festival which will occupy a range of existing galleries and unusual sites across
Hobart. The extensive program will include exhibition openings, parties, artist talks, music and
performances.

Curator Liam James says, “This is the first time a festival like this has taken place in Australia, and the
greater Hobart region is the perfect place for it to happen. We’ve got exhibitions happening in
Clarence, Moonah, Glenorchy and the Hobart CBD area. There will be around 100 emerging and
mid-career artists exhibiting their work. As the word ‘biennale’ suggest, we want the festival to continue
and grow biannually.”

HB17 is funded by the Australia Council for the Arts, Hobart City Council and Tasmanian Regional Arts.
Whilst this funding has made the festival possible, $10,000 still needs to be raised through a
crowdfunding campaign to be launched this week with the Australian Cultural Fund.
