Marine Protection Tasmania today welcomed the news that The Wilderness Society is joining the FLOATMO Alliance, MPT’s Flotilla to be held in constitution dock on Sunday the 18th of June, the final weekend of Dark Mofo.
“We have been overwhelmed by community support, my phone has been running hot!” said Wilhelmina Rea, vice president of Marine Protection Tas.
“We know there isn’t a community license for the Okehampton Bay expansion and we will be voting with our boats on Sunday to protect the East Coast. We are sending the Hodgman Govt and Tassal a message – even if you put those fish in the water, we are not going away, as Nick Riewoldt says – when you have something you love – you stick up for it.”
“This is an issue that affects a broad section of the Tasmanian Community” added Jim Playsted, himself an ex-liberal candidate for Lyons, “If the Govt continues to allow Tassal to move to establish this farm it will become a weeping sore for the Liberal party as we head into the next election. Tourism numbers to the East Coast alone have doubled over the last two years. This iconic coastline helps to brings in 2.4 Billion into the Govt coffers – why would you risk that? Especially with a company that has presided over the unfolding disaster of Macquarie Harbour.”
“We have been overwhelmed with level of support from the community, environment groups and other stakeholders”.
