The State Budget announcement has outlined a plan to provide investment in key areas of concern and focus for Tasmanian students.
President of the Tasmania University Union (TUU) Clark Cooley said “The governments new Global Education Strategy will help grow Tasmania’s international student population, and provide huge economic, cultural and education opportunities for the state. Already international education provides over $200 millions annually in revenue to the Tasmanian economy, and has real spillover benefits to local retail, transport, accommodation, tourism and the hospitality sectors.”
“Marketing Tasmania as an international education destination will strengthen the University of Tasmania’s reputation as a world renowned university and help provide the financial resources to build upon the universities social mission to increase Tasmania’s educational attainment”
Mr. Cooley continued “While we grow the states student population we need to consider how we’re going to adapt our infrastructure to be fit for purpose. It was pleasing to see such a prominent focus on affordable housing in the Treasurer’s budget speech, yet a plan for inner-city Hobart accommodation is still lacking and will need to be a focus of all levels of government as we continue to expand our educational services to the world”
“Public transport in Hobart still needs to be addressed. Projects like the Northern Suburbs Light Railway would open the Hobart’s northerns suburbs to huge economic growth and help remove the impediments to access to higher education caused by existing poor transport links.”
The Tasmania University Union (TUU) was founded in 1899 as the representative body for all students of the University of Tasmania. The TUU seeks to advance the rights and protect the interests of students by ensuring the their voices are heard by parliamentarians, policy makers, university leadership and the wider community.
