The government’s renewed attack on income support payments by proposing to remove the energy supplement for low income earners will hit Tasmania especially hard, Greens Senator for Tasmania Nick McKim says.
“The Government is unrelenting in its attempts to erode and weaken the social safety net as a way to balance the books,” Senator McKim said.
“People accessing the social safety net simply cannot afford to lose any more money.”
“Cutting the energy supplement will hit Tasmania particularly hard, as our state has as higher proportion of people on income support than any other state.”
“The Newstart payment is dismally low and hasn’t increased in real terms for a really long time.”
“Instead of fighting the culture wars and trying to get people fired, Senator Abetz should start standing up for Tasmanians doing it tough.”
