Figures* from the Federal Department of Education today show the Hodgman Government’s preparedness to sell Tasmanian students short and accept an appalling deal for our public schools.
The leaked Federal Government funding figures show that under Turnbull’s Gonski alternative, at best, Tasmanian public schools will receive just $15.6 million in the next two years, compared with $100 million, in the same period, from the full Gonski Agreement.
“These figures show that the Hodgman Government is preparing to accept an appalling deal for our students,” said AEU Tasmania President Helen Richardson.
“Under the Turnbull plan, public schools students receive a tiny fraction of the funding they need for a quality education and Will Hodgman is willing to accept that.”
“Will Hodgman is preparing to sell out our kids and accept the most shameful deal for our public schools that will rob a generation of young people of the support they need for a quality education.”
Under Tasmania’s signed six year Gonski Agreement, our public school students receive on average $1612 each year, over the next two years, and under the Turnbull alternative it’s just $250.
“This is a complete sell out from the Hodgman Government of public education in this state,” said Ms Richardson.
“It will condemn generations of our young people to entrenched disadvantage robbing our kids of a quality education and the chance of a bright future.”
“Tasmania has the highest need of any state or territory and yet Will Hodgman is happy to settle for a pittance from the Federal Government while a $100 million deal sits on the table.”
