International Museums Day raises the awareness of how important museums are in shaping our society today, on an international level. The celebration is held every year in May and coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). In recent years, International Museums Day has attracted almost 35,000 museums organising activities to promote the message in more than 140 countries.
Members of the Devonport Regional Gallery’s Friends Committee, Special Interest Group, The Droogs and even a couple of Councillor’s – have been exploring the light, and the shady aspects of the Devonport City Council (DCC) Permanent Collection. Their ‘findings’ will be presented on International Museums Day, the 18 May at 6pm.
Under the guidance of DRG staff, the members and Councillors have been viewing, selecting and researching small to medium objects in the DCC Permanent Collection.
Like true detectives, they have proceeded with their investigations to reveal the truth about a selection of objects that have caught their eye. They have examined the objects outer appearance, reviewed its provenance and maker, and made judgements based on their individual appreciation of the objects aesthetic qualities.
Want to find out what they have come up with? Their ‘verdicts’ will be handed down on Thursday 18 May, 6pm at the Devonport Regional Gallery. It’s all part of International Museum Day with this year’s theme being Museums and contested histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums. It is an occasion to raise awareness of the importance of museums in our society and celebrate the City’s Collection and its histories within the ambience of the Devonport Regional Gallery heritage building.
