The student union at the University of Tasmania, the Tasmania University Union (TUU) today announced its support of the historic Launceston City Deal between the Commonwealth, Tasmanian Government and Launceston City Council. The centrepiece of the deal is the $260 million commitment to move the University of Tasmania’s main Launceston campus to Inveresk near the city centre.

Tasmania University Union President Clark Cooley said “Today’s announcement shows the very serious commitment to higher education the Commonwealth, State Government and Launceston City Council has for Launceston. Without such a commitment Launceston, and Northern Tasmania risks loosing a vital economic opportunity.”

“This transformational project will make Launceston a global centre of research and education excellence. It will build the University of Tasmania’s global reputation as a world renowned university and help create a thriving CBD with thousands of new students that will provide a huge boost to local businesses and help create a true University City”

Mr Cooley continued “This deal will provide more local jobs, drive local economic growth and boost wages while expanding opportunities for Tasmanians to gain a better education.”

The Tasmania University Union (TUU) was founded in 1899 as the representative body for all students of the University of Tasmania. The TUU seeks to advance the rights and protect the interests of students by ensuring the their voices are heard by parliamentarians, policy makers, university leadership and the wider community.
