After today’s claims by Tassal that there has been a ‘significant improvement’ in environmental conditions in Macquarie Harbour, Tasmania’s peak environment group is again urging Tassal to release the percentage figure showing how much marine life has died at the company’s largest lease in Macquarie Harbour.
“While Tassal has released no evidence to support their claim that there has been a miraculous recovery at their dead zone, this morning Tassal’s Sustainability Manager, Linda Sams, said on local radio that there had been a three-fold increase in fauna.”
“Given that the January IMAS report showed there had been a 99.56 per cent reduction in marine life at Tassal’s Franklin lease, is Ms Sams saying that now only 98.2 per cent of marine life is dead?” asked Laura Kelly, Strategy Director at Environment Tasmania.
“Unfortunately the majority of Tasmanians may not agree that reduction from a 99 per cent dead zone to a 98 per cent dead zone is a cause for congratulations,” Ms Kelly said.
