… BUT TASMANIAN LIBERAL SENATORS STILL DON’T GET IT

Brian Mitchell MP has congratulated the Senate for supporting Labor’s urgent motion on penalty rates late last night that read:

“The need for the Senate to condemn the Prime Minister’s lack of empathy for the Australian workers who rely on penalty rates to make ends meets.”

“The Senate – including crossbenchers who’d previously opposed penalty rates –last night voted to back Australian workers on penalty rates,” Mr Mitchell said.

“It is a shame that Tasmania’s four Liberal senators did not join them.

“Tasmania’s Liberal senators are living in la-la land if they think Tasmanian workers can afford to have their pay cut.

“Many workers affected by this are already struggling to pay their bills and this will make life harder.

Mr Mitchell said he was proud that many Tasmanian businesses were standing by their workers and vowing not to cut penalty rates, despite being able to do so from July 1.

“We also know these cuts won’t stop here.

“Next in line are health care professionals, hairdressers, clubs, beauticians and restaurants – those employers are already preparing their submissions to argue they should be able to pay their workers less for working weekends.”
