Today Labor has demonstrated how to bring together the Nick Xenophon Team, One Nation, Senator Hinch and the Greens in an expression of the Australian public’s distaste for cutting wages for our lowest paid workers.

With Labor’s bill to stop cuts to penalty rates passed in the Senate, the Turnbull Government is now isolated. The only members in the Parliament, in the Senate and in the House of Representatives that support cutting penalty rates are the Liberal and National Party members.

The Federal Member for Bass, Ross Hart said “I understand why the Australian public feel this way about cuts to our lowest paid workers. People are struggling on the margins, they’re having trouble paying for rent, looking after the kids, putting food on the table, petrol in the car.

“It is time for the Government to bring this Bill into the House, and join the rest of the Australian Parliament in halting an unfair wage cut to our lowest paid workers who simply can’t afford them and don’t deserve them.

“Full credit must go to the cross bench in the senate for listening to Australian voters. This out of touch government needs to think of the plight of low paid workers instead of giving $50 billion worth of tax cuts to big business” said Mr Hart.
