Devonport is the place to be during National Youth Week this year if you are a young person on the North West Coast.
Kicking off the week on 31 March, the Devonport Regional Gallery and their young members committee, The Droogs present The Sketchbook Project Exhibition at Devonport LINC. Over the last six weeks young people across the North West collected a handmade sketchbook to fill with their drawings, ideas and writing. All returned sketchbooks are featured in this public exhibition at Devonport LINC from 31 March – 9 April.
“The Sketchbook Project celebrates and promotes young people and their talents, and provides a space for public viewing of their work” said Dianne Sheehan, Education and Public Programs Officer, Devonport Regional Gallery. “We’ve distributed 400 sketchbooks this year, and we’re always amazed at the talent and creativity found between the pages.”
Youth Rewind takes over Mersey Bluff Beach across the first weekend of NYW, 1 and 2 April, with free activities and workshops, including live music performances and a community jam, meditation, yoga and dance workshops and sand art activities.
On Saturday 1 April, 10 am – 1 pm, see performances by local young artists Dylan Boys, Grace Maher, Ezra Sheverton and Isaac and Olivia Kelly at Drift Café Restaurant, and take part in a community jam session with Brad Von Rock. Join local young artist Rachel Kumar in creating a collaborative sand art installation on the beach, and learn how to handle stress and calm the mind with free meditation workshops led by Andrea Martin from Haven Yoga and Meditation.
Stompin’ Youth Dance Company from Launceston joins Youth Rewind on Sunday 2 April facilitating two dance workshops at the Devonport Surf Life Saving Club, Mersey Bluff at 10.30 am and 12 pm. While Andrea will be leading two 30-minute yoga and mindfulness workshops at 10 am and 11.30 am. Bookings preferred for Sunday’s workshops, as places are limited: www.devonporttickets.com.au
For its sixth consecutive year, Devonport’s annual NYW event Reclaim the Lane returns to Rooke Lane on Friday 7 April, 3.30–5.30 pm. The free event transforms Rooke Lane into a vibrant celebration of youth arts and music for all ages to enjoy.
The event is organised each year by Devonport Regional Gallery and the Droogs in partnership with Youth, Family and Community Connections.
‘Reclaiming’ the entire laneway between Steele and Stewart Streets, the event showcases the talents of young people and features various art-making and music workshop spaces, young makers selling their wares, live music by young local performers, a photo booth and interactive stalls by youth service providers. Free food is also available.
Street artist, KT Hollywood (aka Katie Houghton-Ward) is this year’s Reclaim the Lane artist and she will be creating a new work for the lane at Haven Yoga.
This year, Reclaim the Lane will feature young performance artists Mr Inferno and Jayden Mineur, visual artist Rachel Kumar and young musicians from Don College and Geneva Christian School.
