“When the dust is settled in our lives, all we get to keep and take with us is our dignity. Our integrity and the love and respect we share with people”.
“If we do not know who we are, or were we come from, then how do we know where we are going? Healing to us is a spiritual understanding of self, identity, love, belonging, family, security, hurt, heartache, good times and laugher. But mostly healing is the grasp for hope and acceptance based on love and respect, of understanding of ourselves, our supports and being able to tell our stories”.
Tom Powell and Randal Ross created Red Dust Healing together after both working closely with different Aboriginal communities. Tom is a proud Warramunga man who spent 14 years working with the Department of Juvenile Justice in NSW. After the passing of Tom’s father, he enrolled in TAFE to study Community Welfare. Randal is both a proud Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander man, descending from the Bindol and Juru mob and is also from the Kananka mob. Randal has spent many years working in different levels of government, particularly with Aboriginal Youths and Families.
The aim of Red Dust Healing is to encourage participants to study their own life experiences of feeling or being hurt. To examine how these feelings may be linked to patterns of violence, abuse and neglect. Red Dust Healing has a holistic cultural approach which includes non-Aboriginal people. “Rejection has no boundaries, it’s the same for young and old, it’s the same for male and female, it’s the same for black and white – IT JUST HURTS”.
Red Dust is structured to meet significant key areas in one’s life some of which are: identity, family dynamics, relationships, elders, men’s business, Aboriginal history including the impact of colonisation, family violence, drugs and alcohol, mental health, grief and loss. Participants are asked to examine how their upbringing may correlate to their current circumstance or behaviours.
