TasWater Warns of Impending Redundancies Then Declares They Have No Plan

In a further sign that job cuts proposed at council owned water and sewerage provider TasWater are not required, management have declared they don’t actually know what their proposed changes are.

CEPU State Organiser Lee Archer said the behaviour of the manager was unbelievable considering middle management have stated 200 redundancies by the end of May while the CEO talks up the delivery of largest capital works plan Tasmania’s water and sewerage system has ever seen.

The TasWater farce occurred during a meeting today where employees representatives were invited to a briefing on the company’s preliminary decision to restructure the organisation around a group of 4 unspecified initiatives.

“We arrived at 11am today to finally get some details about TasWater’s 4 initiatives and to find out the justification for the proposed changes and redundancies.” Ms Archer said “when we got there the Manager told us they have no written detail whatsoever about the initiatives and asked us if we had any ideas about how they could do a restructure”.

“The comment was bizarre in the least given the week and a half of uncertainty created by the announcement of 4 unspecified initiatives to be rolled out within the next 12 weeks,” Ms Archer said,

“Employees are being told by their supervisors and managers that they will be redundant by the end of the financial year and the company doesn’t even know why.”

“What kind of heartless bastard tells a group of workers that they are being considered for redundancy but that it’s up to those same workers to come up with proposals on why the company should do it”.
