TasWater’s water treatment plant team at Barrington, near Sheffield is taking on the world in a battle to prove Tasmania has the best tasting water on the planet.
Earlier this year it won the Water Industry Operators Association of Australia’s (WIOA) Best Tap Water in Australia competition, up against water treatment plants around the country.
Using a blind taste test, samples were assessed on colour (water should be translucent without any white or brown tones), clarity (crystal clear water with minimal turbidity is preferred), odour and taste.
The win by Barrington which supplies water for Sheffield and Railton, gave it the right to represent Australia at the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Competition held in West Virginia, USA.
This morning at the Barrington water treatment plant, staff carefully collected the water sample which will head to the US.
Around 11 litres of Australia’s best tasting water has been packaged up and is now on its way.
The final judging for the competition is on 25 February where a panel of judges will put Barrington to the taste test against entrants from across the United States and Canada, vying for the title of best tasting tap water in the world.
TasWater CEO Michael Brewster says it’s a great honour for TasWater to be able to represent Australia in this international competition.
“It recognises not only our staff at Barrington but all TasWater staff contributing to providing drinking water across the state.”
“TasWater aims to supply quality water to all our customers where ever they are. We acknowledge however in celebrating the recognition this completion will bring TasWater and the team at Barrington, we still have work to do to provide the similar level of quality to all our customers.
To that end, TasWater is investing heavily in upgrading water supplies across the state over the next few years, bringing fully treated water to more than 20 communities which currently have restrictions on the drinking of their water.
