17th of February 2017

The student union at the University of Tasmania, the Tasmania University Union (TUU) today announced its support of the proposed Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) centre in the heart of the Hobart CBD.
Under the proposal, that was today added to the Infrastructure Priority List by Infrastructure Australia, the university would move its STEM research and training facilities into the CBD in a major expansion of its current city footprint.
“This significant, and potentially transformational project could make Tasmania a global centre of excellence and build our global reputation as a world renowned university” said Clark Cooley, President of the TUU.

“This is a win-win proposal for students, business, the community and the states economic future. The nations economic future is dependant on investment in science, technology, engineering and maths, and Tasmania is no different. A thriving Hobart CBD with thousands of new students will provide a huge boost to local businesses and help create a true University City” Mr Cooley continued.

“This investment in infrastructure coupled with support for new degree opportunities will give the opportunity for more people to attain a tertiary education”

The TUU has previously backed plans for investment in the Hedberg, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Development also located in the Hobart CBD.

The Tasmania University Union (TUU) was founded in 1899 as the state-wide representative body for all students of the University of Tasmania. The TUU seeks to advance the rights and protect the interests of students by ensuring the their voices are heard by parliamentarians, policy makers, university leadership and the wider community.
