The Shadow Assistant Minister to the Leader for Tasmania, Senator Helen Polley and Federal Member for Bass, Ross Hart says the Turnbull Government’s cuts are hurting our local schools.
“This is the time of the year that school goes back and many parents are thinking about their kids’ education, and what the future holds,” Senator Polley said.
“Under Malcolm Turnbull and the Liberals, the future for schools in Bass looks grim.
“Nationwide, the Liberals are cutting $30 billion from schools. This will mean over $154 million from schools in Bass, which is the same as losing one out of every seven teachers.
“These cuts mean fewer teachers, less one-on-one attention, and students being left behind.
“These cuts also mean students getting less help with the basics like reading, writing, maths, science, and computer skills.”
Mr Hart says that schools in Bass do an amazing job.
“Because of these cuts schools like Queechy High, Prospect High, Riverside Primary and Waverley Primary are in the dark about what programs their students might miss out on if Malcolm Turnbull gets his way.
“Malcolm Turnbull and the Liberals talk a lot about jobs and growth, but these cuts prove that they don’t really care about Tasmania’s future productivity,” Mr Hart said.
“Malcolm Turnbull and the Liberals are cutting funding from schools because they think you should only get a good education if you can afford to pay.”
“The Liberals can’t find money for schools, but they can find money for a big business tax cut,” Senator Polley said.
“The Liberals have chosen to spend money on handouts for big business and the banks, rather than schools. You just can’t trust the Liberals on education.
“Getting a good education is the key to improving every child’s opportunities in life and it is critical to ensure Australia has a strong economy with secure jobs.”
