The rollout of this year’s TasWater community grants program is continuing with the latest recipient Big Monkey Theatre Company planning a big performance, helped along by the funds made available from the grant.
Big Monkey has a proud history of performance in Tasmania renowned for its shows which appeal to children and adults alike.
It specialises in performing at festivals, for schools and its often quirky season in the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens each year is now a summer tradition.
This year the Gardens show is Alice in Wonderland and TasWater is helping fund a very special performance.
It will be for an audience of autistic children and their families as well as for children who are deaf.
Big Monkey Company Manager Kiah Davey says TasWater’s grant will help provide interpreters with the skills to sign in Auslan as well as assisting in educating the actors and crew in how to present to and what to expect from an audience of autistic children.
“We have previously trialled a performance for Autistic children but with the support of TasWater this year we will be able to publicise the show to a wider audience and provide Auslan signers to interpret for deaf children.”
CEO Michael Brewster says TasWater is excited by the opportunity to join Big Monkey in this theatre adventure.
“By presenting this children’s classic to a very special audience, Big Monkey will enable the children and their families take part in a live theatre performance, something which is often difficult to do in a traditional theatre setting.”
The TasWater sponsored performance of Alice in Wonderland will be on Saturday 21st January at 2pm in the Botanical Gardens and tickets can be purchased by the general public.
Information about TasWater Small Community Grants is available on our website (www.taswater.com.au) and applications for 2017 open in February.
