The National Union of Students will take part in a protest against Donald Trump on Friday 3
February, 5:30 pm, at the State Library of Victoria.

We will be joined by Greens leader Richard Di Natale and the president of the Islamic Council of
Victoria. Hundreds are set to demonstrate against Trump’s Islamophobic travel ban affecting
citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries.

The demonstration has been called by the campaign group Australia says NO to Trump and has
been endorsed by the Islamic Council of Victoria, the Refugee Action Collective, the
Australian Greens and other groups.

The rally will demand an end to the Australian government’s support for Trump’s executive orders
and call on the prime minister to shut down the Manus Island and Nauru detention camps and
bring the detained refugees and asylum seekers to the Australian mainland.

QUOTES attributable to National Union of Students Education Officer Anneke Demanuele:

“The ban is racist, abhorrent and should be condemned and denounced in every corner of the
globe.”

“It has been extremely heart-warming to see tens of thousands of protesters rallying at airports
across the US to oppose the Muslim ban and to give solidarity to those detained. It is this kind of
mass action that can overturn the ban.”

“Australian students have been caught up in the new president’s xenophobic net, and NUS
condemns fully the Muslim ban as well as Malcolm Turnbull’s sordid embrace of Donald Trump.”

“Australia will not build a border wall, but successive governments have turned adjacent oceans
into something akin to a militarized moat. They have spent billions on offshore detention camps
while crying poor when it comes to funding education and social services.”
