Strong support for salmon workers as campaign is launched
Salmon farming creates thousands of full-time jobs in Tasmania
Labor’s proud of our history of supporting the industry
Labor Leader Bryan Green joined supporters of aquaculture on Parliament’s lawns today as a campaign in support of salmon workers was launched.
“The Australian Workers Union’s ‘Save Tassie Salmon’ campaign is about supporting the 5200 employed in the industry,” Mr Green said.
“State and Federal Labor were both well represented at today’s rally and we’re very proud of the role we played in establishing the industry.
“It was terrific to hear from workers about how much being employed in salmon farming means to them.
“The fact that salmon producers provide meaningful employment opportunities for people with a variety of skills and opportunities for career progression and work internationally, is also recognised by Labor.
“Salmon workers can be rest assured that Labor takes a strong bi-partisan position with the Government when it comes to ensuring the industry is sustainable for future generations.
“This means encouraging the science to drive the decision making that underpins further investment and expansion.
“Labor encourages the Liberal Government to take the lead and foster a stronger relationship between the salmon industry and other parts of the Tasmanian economy.
“We believe for example that tourism and salmon operations can work out a way to co-exist and complement each other.”
