The Australian Christian Lobby has welcomed news the Tasmanian Government will introduce legislation targeting inappropriate, sexually explicit advertising in public spaces.

This follows action by the Queensland Government in July and Victoria earlier this week to force offensive slogans off their roads through legislation which allows the Government to deregister vehicles, such as Wicked Camper vans, that display messages contravening advertising standards.

ACL spokesperson on the dignity of women and children, Wendy Francis, who has long campaigned for all outdoor advertising to be G-rated, said it was important to protect children from being exposed to adult content.

“Legislation such as this is culture-changing and a step in the right direction to remove degrading messages that vilify women from our public spaces,” Ms Francis said.

“The ACL calls on all states and territories to join with Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania and end the exploitation of women and children. These offensive slogans in our public spaces contribute to domestic violence, the objectification of women, and the subsequent entrenched gender inequality,” Ms Francis said.

Ms Francis said the State Government’s had to step in to protect women and children from sexually explicit advertising because the Advertising Standards Board had failed in its task to enforce advertising guidelines.
