 Syrian and Iraqi refugees find safe haven in Tasmania
 Tasmanian community proud to open the welcome door
 Terrible ordeal suffered in war zones not to be forgotten

The Tasmanian community will be sure to welcome the first of its new Syrian and Iraqi families to be granted safe haven in the state almost a year-and-a-half after plans to resettle refugees were first announced.

Shadow Multicultural Affairs Minister Madeleine Ogilvie said after the ordeal suffered by families fleeing overseas war zones, the Tasmanian community had opened its doors and its hearts to refugees.

“It’s a joy that Tasmanians can finally express in action their deep-seated desire to reach out to those in need,” Ms Ogilvie said.

“Labor welcomes our first Syrian and Iraqi families and is proud that we have kept the pressure on the Hodgman Government to deliver on its promise to resettle members of the international community fleeing unthinkable horrors in war zones.

“No one can be anything other than horrified at the human toll the Syrian war is taking.

“It’s hoped this first intake of families is just the beginning and that an anticipated 200 refugees will ultimately find a home in Tasmania.

“I encourage the community to get behind these families and support them as they integrate into Tasmanian society.

“At the same time I encourage the Tasmanian community to reject the deeply offensive attitude and the nonsense of the Immigration Minister Peter Dutton who has fought against accepting families fleeing the horror in the home countries.

“At this time, compassion should be paramount.”
