John Wood, Julie Nihill in Bakersfield Mist …
A theatrical journey from the depths of the Carpathian Mountains to the streets of Paris and a trailer park in Bakersfield … a conversation with Freud, the ultimate romantic ballet, the naughtiest wombat, a comedy hypnotist, Fringe theatre and a vibrant Festival Club … all coming to Launceston in 2017!
Launceston’s performing arts calendar will be jam packed in 2017, with a huge program of events on offer in the 22nd annual subscription season presented by Theatre North at the Princess.
Each year the subscription season delivers a variety of professional theatrical events – a mix of national touring productions and locally produced professional theatre and arts events. The season aims to engage audiences and create opportunities for local arts workers, delivering quality entertainment and broadening the appetite of Launceston theatre goers.
When Maude (Julie Nihill) picks up a cheap painting in an opp shop, she’s convinced it’s a Jackson Pollock worth millions. A world class art expert (John Wood – Blue Heelers) arrives at her trailer park to authenticate the painting. Based on a true story, Bakersfield Mist by Stephen Sachs is a comedy from Tasmanian Theatre Company that will delight lovers of modern theatre next year.
The gothic horror story of Dracula by Bram Stoker swoops into the Princess in a gripping new production from Queensland’s shake & stir theatre co (Animal Farm, Wuthering Heights).
An imagined meeting between two of the 20th century’s greatest minds – Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis, creates a thought provoking and touching exploration of some of the greatest questions of all time.
Freud’s Last Session will be the first production by Hobart’s Hamley Productions to be performed in Launceston.
An exquisite double bill from Sydney Dance Company features multi award-winning choreography from Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela and new work from Australia’s own Gabrielle Nankivell.
Internationally acclaimed flautist Jane Rutter will play up to 12 different classical and ethnic flutes when she performs Flute Spirits & The Four Seasons.
The comedy crowd will be flocking to the Princess for plenty of laughs with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow, the Sydney Comedy Festival Showcase and Matt Hale’s Hypnolicious comedy hypnosis show all in the 2017 program.
For lovers of classical ballet, The Australian Ballet’s Regional Tour of one of the world’s most loved ballets – Giselle, and Melbourne City Ballet’s exciting new ballet The Wonderful Wizard of Oz will both be performed at the Princess Theatre in 2017.
Mothball, the naughtiest wombat in Australia, will be brought to life through the magic of puppetry and live music in Monkey Baa Theatre Company’s Diary of a Wombat, based on the book by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley.
And what better way to start the 2017 season than by welcoming Ten Days on the Island to the Princess Theatre and Earl Arts Centre with Fragile Matter – new from Tasdance, Terrapin Puppet Theatre’s You and Me and the Space Between, the classic Chinese fable White Snake from Shanghai and The Frock – performed by MADE and choreographed by Graeme Murphy.
Theatre North at the Princess will expand the 2017 subscription season to not only offer subscription prices to these Festival shows but also to present an exciting Fringe Program and Festival Club at the Earl Arts Centre in March.
“Our Fringe program is an exciting adjunct to the Festival in March, said Theatre North at the Princess General Manager, Greg Leong, ” with Exposing Edith, an award-winning cabaret tale of the legendary Edith Piaf, Mudlark Theatre’s renowned One Day project and RAW2! – a concert featuring the best of the best from our busking competition at Festivale in February”.
“The Festival Club Bar will be the place to meet”, said Mr Leong, “with Red Brick Road Ciderhouse in residence and our luminous 21 Living Icons exhibition installed in the Earl Arts Centre foyer to create a lively and unique meeting place for festival goers to enjoy a drink and to celebrate the vibrant and living arts community that is Launceston”.
