• Matthew Groom’s mismanagement costs Hydro Tasmania dearly
• Tamar Valley Power Station decision proves extremely costly
• Diesel generators cost $64 million but could have been avoided

Labor Leader Bryan Green said Hydro Tasmania’s $65 million loss is down to Energy Minister Matthew Groom’s mismanagement of the state’s energy assets.

“Matthew Groom’s decision to shut down and sell the Tamar Valley Power Station meant we had to install diesel generators at the height of the energy crisis,” Mr Green said.

“Running the generators cost $64 million which accounts for almost all of Hydro’s $65.4 million loss.

“The cost of running the TVPS on gas is miniscule compared to the price of the diesel needed to run the generators.

“We are talking about around $63 every mega-watt hour for gas compared to $1163 for a mega-watt hour of diesel power.

“The diesel generators created a very small amount of energy for the state in the scheme of things.

“Matthew Groom’s mismanagement of Tasmania’s energy assets heavily contributed to the energy crisis and has cost taxpayers a fortune.”
