• Government dragging its feet on public transport plan
• Labor would establish Passenger Transport Corporation
• Ferry service needs to be part of an integrated strategy
Infrastructure Minister Rene Hidding is months behind Labor in considering how to make ferry transport viable in Tasmania.
Labor’s 10-year passenger transport strategy, released in May this year, proposed the establishment of a Passenger Transport Corporation.
“A Passenger Transport Corporation could make ferry services a reality,” Shadow Public Transport Minister Craig Farrell said.
“Any ferry service needs to be part of an integrated public transport strategy that benefits all Tasmanians.
“Rene Hidding is playing catch-up by finally offering vague support for a ferry proposal across the Derwent.
“Labor’s 10-year, $60 million strategy to improve public transport services would unlock a range of opportunities.
“Potential ferry services would be just one benefit of a fresh approach to public transport in Tasmania.
“When it comes to public transport in Tasmania we need to be thinking about how we can do things, not why we can’t.”
