Tasmanians will be gathering again at Dru Point Bicentennial Park, Margate on Sunday, 6 November 2016 for the third annual Hobart Walk4BrainCancer.

Event organiser, Senator Catryna Bilyk said that her own experience with brain tumours motivated her to help others.

“In 2008, I was diagnosed with two brain tumours. Under the circumstances I was very lucky—my tumours were benign and successfully removed. Nonetheless, it was a terrifying experience for me and my family to go through having to face the possibility that I might die soon.

“Brain cancer is one of the most deadly forms of cancer,” Senator Bilyk said. “It kills more young Australians aged 18-40 than any other cancer and more Australian children than any other disease.

“Through organising and participating in these fundraisers over the years I have met many people who have experienced the tragedy of loved ones dying from brain cancer.

“Some of the tragic stories I have heard involve children has young as seven being struck down by the disease.

“One of the most heartbreaking experiences for a parent is to outlive their own child. This is one of the key issues that motivates me to raise funds for brain cancer research—to do my part to end this terrible disease.”

Walk4BrainCancer is a national fundraiser for Cure Brain Cancer, founded by renowned neurosurgeon Professor Charlie Teo AM. The event typically raises over $1 million nationally, the proceeds of which go to fund vital brain cancer research.
