The time for talking about Tasmania’s jobs challenge is over, according to TasCOSS.
“Now is the time for action on employment in our State,” Kym Goodes, CEO of TasCOSS said.
“Tasmania is experiencing a full blown jobs crisis with 16,000 Tasmanians waking up each day hoping this will be the day they find a job.
“But with 1900 jobs on offer, the reality is the crisis can only be tackled through innovation and creative strategies.
“Our State is full of entrepreneurs and brilliant minds.
“It is absolutely time to put these minds together to take action now to retain existing jobs and grow markets in the new economy so the next generation has employment.
“There is no time left to talk about minor fluctuations in statistics from one month to the next; Tasmanians need action.
“Both the State and Federal Governments must demonstrate true leadership by listening to the experts and take action to leverage off of the competitive advantages Tasmania has.”
Ms Goodes said Tasmanian-based entrepreneurs and the community services sector are well placed to tackle the State’s employment challenges.
“Creative, compassionate and innovative Tasmanians are chomping at the bit to take action on employment opportunities, all that’s missing is leadership.
“The Tasmanian Government has skills plans, industry plans, a population strategy, a Coordinator General, an (Abbott established) Economic Council, but Tasmanians still do not have a clear vision, a clear plan for how we can generate jobs and support Tasmanians into job opportunities.”
