The rich tones of Daniel Thompson’s Johnny Cash-esque voice travel down the phone lines to Tassie, a precursor to Daniel’s annual visit! You have to pinch yourself as a reminder that you aren’t speaking to Cash himself but one of his greatest tribute artists!
Having notched up so many visits Daniel is very familiar with and loves Tasmania. He especially enjoys indulging in reflective activities like wandering around constitution dock, the beautiful old buildings of Launceston and for the first time is looking forward to the inclusion of Burnie in his tour schedule!
This year Daniel’s tribute act will have a slight twist in not focusing solely on Johnny Cash but instead to a host of his contemporaries from the 70’s as well. Daniel says as many of these artists have been categorised as country artists we rarely hear their music on mainstream radio stations.
This is no reflection on these great songs which Daniel agrees don’t get the exposure they deserve. Many of these acts are still active and making new music, one example being Dr Hook’s Dennis Locorriere, who regularly tours, including Tasmania.
As is always the case with any of Daniel’s presentations there is a wealth of interesting trivia to learn about the artist as well as enjoying the music.
For two of the most challenging voices Daniel replicates in this show, he says, are those of Glenn Campbell and John Denver. He has some interesting bits of info about both, including the fact that Glenn Campbell was part of The Beach Boys.
John Denver reminds us that Denver had great difficulty as a country/pop artist being accepted by the country music fraternity.
Daniel hopes the show will canvas where many of these artists started and where they ended up in their career.
For those Johnny Cash fans Daniel tells me next year he will be back with an all new Johnny Cash show.
