Salamanca last Saturday …

Last Saturday was sunny, and as I needed some bamboo sticks, off I went to Salamanca market.
What surprised me was the heavy shading of stalls on both sides at the Davey Street end of the market from the new development on the site of the former Art Deco Printing Office.
At 11am, the sun didn’t shine on any part of the street until I drew level with the edge of Parliament House. It made the market seem unreasonably gloomy.
Is anyone else disappointed by the size and scale of the new Parliament Square buildings in Hobart?
The hotel and Salamanca Buildings (the two tallest buildings within Parliament Square) are 7 and 9 storeys respectively.
Removing the ugly state offices at 10 Murray Street may be a good thing, but it looks like this is being being replaced with two just-as-inappropriate multi-storey buildings. And the government now has to lease office space .
The Parliament Square development is at odds with the planning application that states:
‘New buildings must not be individually prominent in terms of contrast with neighbouring buildings by being significantly higher or having a larger apparent size when viewed in street elevation.’
The same application claimed shading of the market opposite St David’s Park would not be affected by the new buildings.
