The climate change organization 350.org is calling on Canberrans to join the campaign against the job cuts to CSIRO and the degrading of its vital research capacity. This is one of a number of events foreshadowed for this campaign.
“These job cuts are irrational and reflect a lack of understanding of the need for ongoing climate science research,” said Josh Creaser, 350.org Frontline Projects coordinator.
“Science is critical to our ability to understand climate and other processes, to track changes in the climate system and ecosystems and therefore understand the degree of urgency needed as well as the actions necessary for mitigation and adaptation to climate change” he said.
“CSIRO CEO Dr Larry Marshall has said that now that we know that humans are contributing to climate change, the need to study climate change is of low priority. This reflects an appalling lack of understanding of the issue by Dr Marshall.”
An expert panel will discuss why these cuts are unacceptable and a film screening of The Inertia Trap, a film by Canberran Kathryn Kelly, showcases the work of many of CSIRO’s climate scientists.
