SOUTHERN CROSS CARE STAFF AT THE MT ESK AGED CARE RESIDENTIAL FACILITY IN LAUNCESTON WILL RALLY OUTSIDE THE FACILITY TODAY AT 3.00PM TO HIGHLIGHT THE CRISIS IN AGED CARE.

Following a recent rally at Yaraandoo in the North West, staff at Southern Cross facilities across the state are continuing their action to raise community awareness that resident care continues to be compromised due to excessive workloads created by underfunding and short staffing.

“Staff employed at Aged Care facilities across the state continue to tell us of residents whose care is being compromised because there are not enough people employed to provide the level of care that our community expects to be provided to our elderly relatives and friends”, Assistant State Secretary Robbie Moore said.

Residents who eat cold food because of a lack of staff to assist with meals; residents who are left in bed until late morning or early afternoon; and of residents who receive minimal one on one meaningful contact because workers are just too busy to spend quality time with them.

“Staff at Southern Cross care are distressed that, due to a lack of staff and adequate funding, they are not able to provide their residents with the care that they deserve. For months now HACSU Members have been requesting a meeting with the CEO of Southern Cross Care to discuss their concerns. To date, management is still refusing to meet with our Members. This apparent lack of respect to our Members, who provide the care and support to some of the most vulnerable people in our community is a disgrace”.

“HACSU is calling on Southern Cross Care management to meet with our Delegates as a matter of urgency, before resident care deteriorates further,” Robbie Moore said
