Save the Tarkine has today written to the Premier to raise conflict of interest concerns with the appointment of Adam Brooks as Minister for Mines.

Mr Brooks is the owner of a mining services company, raising concerns regarding the impartiality required of a Minister in discharging his statutory obligations.

“Save the Tarkine has very real concerns that Mr Brooks commercial interests may give rise to a perception of bias, or could actually influence his decision making on matter in the mining portfolio”, said Save the Tarkine Campaign Coordinator, Scott Jordan.

In his previous role as Shadow Minister for Mines, Mr Brooks publically refused to visit the Tarkine with conservationists to discuss proposed mines in Tarkine reserves.

“Mr Brooks obviously has the confidence of the Premier and his cabinet colleagues, and so we urge the Premier to shift Mr Brooks to a portfolio that does not have such a clear potential for conflict of interest”.

Save the Tarkine has requested that if the Premier is not prepared to shift Mr Brooks to another portfolio, that he refer the matter to the Integrity Commission for advice.
