The AMA Public Hospital Report Card released this morning show Tasmania’s public hospitals are continually failing to meet yearly targets and waiting times for elective surgeries continues to increase.

The report also examines Tasmania’s public hospital capacity, emergency department waiting and treatment times and elective surgery waiting and treatment times.

AMA Tasmania President A/Prof Tim Greenaway said this AMA Report Card shows Tasmania to be the worst in the country when it comes to elective surgery.

“Tasmanians are waiting longer than anyone for surgery that although is titled elective is in fact necessary and impacts heavily on emergency load in public hospitals,” said A/Prof Greenaway.

“Funding cuts, both at State and Federal levels are impacting on performance benchmarks and the situation is only going to get worse in coming years.”
