Not just content with one great weekend of folk, organisers of the Cygnet Folk Festival are
partnering with the Woodford and Illawarra Folk Festivals to deliver the best of the festival into
7 community halls and theatres in regional Tasmania in January.
‘I’m so excited that only a couple of years after floating the idea, we are to be launching
Festival of Small Halls in Tasmania in 2016!’ says Cygnet Folk Festival Artistic Director, Erin
Collins.
‘The sense of excitement amongst our host communities is palpable. This tour in our beautiful
Island state is bound to be a highlight in an already busy summer calendar, but much of the
action currently takes place in or near the capital. To get world class performers into our rural
and regional towns will be a real blast, and so appreciated by the locals.’
Canadian power trad trio The East Pointers and Australian singer-songwriter Liz Stringer are
looking forward to hitting the road together for the first time.
‘I’m stoked to be heading out on the Small Halls adventure in Tassie with the East Pointers. I
love Tasmania, I’ve never played Cygnet Folk Festival, I toured in Canada for the first time for
two months in 2015 and heard great things about The East Pointers, so it feels like the
convergence of some special stuff.’ says Liz.
Modeled on this traditional Australian hall experience, the Festival of Small Halls Summer
Tour concentrates on visiting towns where communities are strong, but may not have access
to high quality musical acts due to their remote locations, or lack of a ‘traditional’ venue. This
is the sixth Australian tour for Festival of Small Halls – a grass-roots tour that pairs a visiting
international artist and a notable Australian folk artist for shows in small towns and community
halls. Local hosts also have the opportunity to include a home-grown support act.
‘We all know how important the arts, and in particular music, is to the wellbeing of we
humans, so I feel that Festival of Small Halls will be taking not just a fun evening, but a real
infusion of positivity into these towns.’ Erin continues.
‘I must also admit that I’m more than a little keen to show off our magical Island to our
International and interstate artists – we plan to give them the best time with true Tasmanian
hospitality. Can’t wait!’
Tickets are on sale 22 October at www.festivalofsmallhalls.com and at select community
outlets.
The Festival of Small Halls Queensland New South Wales is presented by the Woodford Folk
