The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Tasmania and New Zealand’s leading agriculture university unites two trans-Tasman forces with the common aim of growing the sector.

Today the Lincoln University and the University of Tasmania entered into a three year partnership that will see them collaborate in agriculture research, development and education.

This is a great outcome, and clear demonstration of why it was so important that I lead an agribusiness delegation to New Zealand to strengthen partnerships in agriculture.

We have so much in common with our island neighbours, and so much to learn and share. This will be enhanced by the new MoU between Lincoln University and the University of Tasmania.

This will build on the capacity of the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture, a joint venture between the Tasmanian Government and UTAS, to deliver research to directly benefit Tasmania’s expanding horticulture, dairying and livestock industries.

The universities will work together in fields of education and research on:

• Exchange programs for students and staff for educational and research mutual interest;
• Exchange information on research and extension delivery and infrastructure management;
• Joint research programs, seminars and workshops; and
• Joint supervision of research students.

R&D is a key driver of innovation in agriculture and this partnership will provide unprecedented opportunities for sharing knowledge that will benefit our industries greatly.

I look forward to continuing to explore opportunities in dairy, wine, education and biosecurity as we continue the agribusiness delegation in New Zealand, which concludes on November 12.
