The man who exposed Leo Schofield as a Tasmania-hater in this article for the Sydney Morning Herald – here – is coming down to the land of ‘dregs and bogans’ to conduct two in-depth workshops on December 6th and 7th.
On Saturday Mark will focus on the effective writing of feature articles for various mediums; and on the Sunday he’ll turn to his expertise as a novelist, with a focus on creating believable characters.

Writing a Winning Feature with Mark Dapin
Saturday December 5, 10:00am – 4:00pm
Mark has worked in almost every aspect of publishing and journalism – he’s been a proofreader, typesetter, subeditor, and was the editor for a number of big time men’s magazines. He’s written for The Times and the Guardian in London, and pretty much every major daily newspaper in Australia, from The Sydney Morning Herald to the Melbourne Herald Sun. In addition to his novels and many published short stories, he’s edited two anthologies of war writing for Penguin Books.
Mark’s many years in journalism feeds into the style for his fiction work, and vice versa. The result is that his feature-articles are entertaining and his works of fiction are clear and believable.
Participants will learn how to
Write long features for newspapers, magazines or websites.
Compose an arresting introduction, and keep the reader’s attention all the way through to a satisfying conclusion.
Set the scene and paint the characters.
Interview people to get the quotes you need.
Avoid the use of clichés and formulaic language, and come up with new ways to express your ideas.
The workshop costs $130 for TWC members, $150 for non-members. Lunch included. Held at Kickstart Arts, Building 1831 South, New Town

Develop credible, consistent major characters
