Tasmanians from all walks and spiritual beliefs gathered on Parliament lawns today to send a message that Tasmania welcomes diversity and rejects the persecution of people on the basis of their religion.
The peaceful rally was in stark contrast to the rowdy Reclaim Australia and United Patriots protestors who were also out today, spreading their message of ignorance and fear.
It is un-Australian to persecute people on the basis of their religious beliefs. It is un-Tasmanian not to welcome refugees and asylum seekers with open hearts and homes.
Tasmania is an island made up of peoples from more than 170 different nations and cultures. Our diversity gives us social and economic strength. We must nurture and cherish the diversity of our community.
By spreading a message of hate towards refugees and Australian Muslims, Reclaim Australia and the United Patriots are marching to the tune of the murderous cowards responsible for the slaughter in Paris last week.
The killers want to create ‘us and them’ societies in western nations. That is part of their twisted plan.
The best antidote to hate is love. The best antidote to racism and persecution is inclusion. As supporters of peace and democracy, these are the most effective weapons we have to counter the threat of terrorism.
