Labor welcomes the findings of the inquiry into the Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal people as Tasmania’s First People.
Shadow Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Madeleine Ogilvie said it’s a step forward.
“The inquiry finds on the evidence presented that the Constitution of Tasmania should be amended to include recognition of Aboriginal people as Tasmania’s First People,” Ms Ogilvie said.
“This is an historic moment for Tasmania in terms of recognition and inclusion. It is my deep hope that amending he Tasmanian Constitution this way will encourage a new conversation of inclusion and recognition.
“This initiative has cross party support and I would like to acknowledge the work of the committee and support of the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, who decided early to support our law reform proposal.
“Constitutional reform is a shining example of people coming together across party boundaries to deliver meaningful change.
“In particular I would also like to acknowledge the community leaders who took the time to present to the inquiry.
“While today marks a step forward, we know constitutional recognition is just a small part of the reconciliation process.
“There is so much more we can do, including improving cultural heritage law and addressing intellectual property rights.”
