Labor Leader Bryan Green today ramped up Labor’s electric transport push.
Meeting with members of the Australian Electric Vehicle Association in Devonport, Mr Green called on the Government to actively facilitate the installation of charging stations around the state.
“The Government should start by working with TT-Line to install electric vehicle charging stations at the Devonport and Melbourne Spirit terminals,” Mr Green said.
“We’ve recently seen a charging station installed at Anvers at Latrobe which shows terrific initiative from a private business, but the Government needs to play an active role to ensure the roll-out is coordinated, strategic and compatible with a wide range of electric cars.
“We are missing out on a golden opportunity to make Tasmania a world leader in electric transport technology.
“Labor’s $10 million plan would put us at the forefront when it comes to electric transport and create valuable jobs in manufacturing.
“It would also keep around a billion dollars in our economy rather than it being spent on importing fuel.
“We are seeing more and more people making the switch to electric vehicles but the Government needs to make sure we have the appropriate infrastructure across the state.
“So far we’ve heard nothing from the Liberals when it comes to creating a network of charging stations.
“This is crucial if we are to market Tasmania as an electric-vehicle friendly place to visit. Drivers need to have confidence that they will have reliable access to charging stations.”
