Fossil Free Protestors Expect Meaningful Negotiations are Imminent
Fossil Free UTAS are ending their occupation of the Vice Chancellor’s Building today, after a marathon two-week sit-in. The protestors believe that the university is willing to enter meaningful negotiations on the issue of divestment and are disbanding the occupation as a gesture of good faith.
“We have been here for two weeks and in that time we’ve seen an incredible amount of support from students and staff for the university to sell its shares in fossil fuels,” said Fossil Free UTAS spokesperson Mell Jones.
“Hundreds of people have asked the Vice Chancellor to divest UTAS from fossil fuels via phone calls, letters, emails and personal conversations.”
“The university knows the student and staff community want a commitment to divest from fossil fuels.”
“It has been amazing to be part of this action with literally hundreds of people coming together to support the divestment campaign at the busiest time of year in the university calendar.”
“We will not stop campaigning until the university divests from fossil fuels, but we are willing to enter negotiations in good faith to find an outcome that benefits the university.”
“I sincerely hope we do not have to come back again in the New Year, I hope we can find a resolution and move towards divestment.”
“We maintain that the Paris Climate Summit is an important deadline for divestment from fossil fuels, it sends a clear message to governments that stronger climate action is imperative.”
“From 30 November there will be significant international attention on climate action.”
“As a world renowned climate and Antarctic research institution UTAS would benefit by following the example set yesterday by the Australian Academy of Science by divesting from fossil fuels.”
27 November saw three new divestment commitments in Australia, marking a major victory for climate campaigners. The Australian Academy of Sciences, National Tertiary Education Union and City of Melbourne all announced commitments to divest from fossil fuels.
