Reports that the Turnbull Government is considering lowering the age limit for control orders to 12 are deeply concerning, Australian Greens spokesperson for legal affairs Senator Nick McKim says.

“In the space of a week, the government has gone from wanting to lower the age from 16 to 14, and now 12. When will it stop?” Senator McKim said.

“The Turnbull Government has once again failed to offer any evidence that these measures will do anything to make Australians safer.”

“We need to move beyond knee jerk reactions in response to specific incidents and adopt an evidence-based approach to developing policy in a considered and coherent way.”

“The Turnbull Government should be focusing on inclusion and support for parents who are worried about their children being radicalised.”

“This is a very disappointing effort from Mr Turnbull. It’s a move straight out of the Tony Abbott handbook, and risks being counterproductive.”
